Who: Hosted by Kaci Lou Photography, a Utah wedding and elopement photographer. 12 photographers will join together in this fun, growth-filled and portfolio worthy workshop.
What: There will be a photography lighting workshop first, then an early dinner, and finally traveling together to the salt flats to take photos. We will rotate in 4 groups to photograph a mock wedding couple, elopement couple, engaged couple, and bride with wedding details.
When: Friday March 27th, 2020 starting at 12:30PM – 8:30PM*
You can view the full time-line here
Where: We will meet at The Wave in Salt Lake City (32 Exchange Pl, Salt Lake City, UT 84111) then drive to the Bonneville Salt Flats West Bound Rest Stop (1.5 hour drive there, 1.5 hour drive back). Travel (and parking in SLC) not included but we can setup a carpool for the attendees.
Why: The Utah Salt Flats are flooded in March and create the most beautiful reflection of the sky. You are walking on a thin layer of water and salt, but it looks like you are walking on clouds. This is the most magical place to take photos! But also really hard, the lighting is really harsh since it is a vast space of nothingness. Before we leave for the flats, I will be teaching you how to make the most of golden hour and blue hour lighting. As well as using flash, both on and off camera.
Is this workshop for you? It is if you have a camera with manual controls and want to break into weddings and elopements. My first two photo shoots at the salt flats I did for free, from those styled images I now have people that want to fly to Utah just to take photos there with me! I will also be sharing my tips on using the images we take at the workshop to get more clients.
If you have been to one of my workshops before, then you know, I put a lot of effort into making them as organized and beautiful as possible. I have planned this Utah Salt Flats Photography Workshop months in advance to make sure everything is top notch. There will be 4 sets to take photos of with only 2-4 photographers per set. No fighting to get the shot!
The colors will be muted, flowers over the top, and simple sets that showcase adventurous couples. Vendors and models will be announced in February in the Facebook group for this workshop.
+Swag bag of goodies to uplevel your photos
+Dinner, drinks and snacks all included
+Confidence to shoot in harsh light
+Epic photos at one of the most beautiful places in the US, dare I say the WORLD.
+Tips on how to use these photos to book more clients
I would be happy to help with your travel plans! I travel with my camera gear frequently, especially from Arizona! If you are using a major airline, fly into Salt Lake City and it would be best to stay in Salt Lake City though we do have some awesome cottage and treehouse airbnb’s all around the state.
If you want to save a bit of money, Allegiant is a regional airline that flys out of Mesa, AZ into Ogden or Provo Utah. It can save you some money though the planes are small and they up charge for everything.
The Bonneville Salt Flats are just 5 minutes away from Wendover, Nevada so you could drive from Salt Lake City to the Salt Flats then stay the night in Wendover if you would like. It is a fun, little town with a few casinos (Utah doesn’t allow gambling so this is where people have to go XD).
If you are driving, you are in for some epic scenery! Try to setup shoots along the way. From Arizona you can drive through Las Vegas, or go straight North through Page (Horseshoe Bend and Lake Powell). There are so many epic places here in Utah if you want to make a week out of it – Moab, Zion’s National Park, Little Sahara Sand Dunes, Park City, waterfalls, and hot springs galore.
+Camera gear, especially your wide lenses and flashes if you have them
+Water bag for your camera if you have it, then you can get some cool shots kicking up water
+Drone if you have one. Photos from above are so amazing there!
+External battery to charge your phone on, it is going to be a long day and you will want some behind the scenes videos!
+Rain boots!!! The salt is very harsh on your feet, it will start to burn if you walk on it too much barefoot! It washes out of clothes easily, but not out of shoes.
+Towels (but I will have extra)
+Warm clothes + jacket (and an extra set if you can). The weather is usually in the 50s in March. We will be shooting after the sunsets so it gets chilly fast, down to the 30s. You will get wet and salty walking around in the water!
I have been dubbed as the photographer “Queen of the Salt Flats” by friends, for good reason! I have photographed couples there in harsh sun, overcast days, rainy days, in 30 degree weather, windy days, at night, you name it 🙂 I want to share all of those experiences with you so you can get the best photos possible for your business! We are gonna have a ton of fun together!
To save your seat, use this link! Only 12 spots total available and some photographers have already bought tickets**
*Date will not be changed due to weather unless it is life threatening. If weather is an issue we will move the shoot to the Great Saltair or head to the salt flats first and save the workshop tips for after. Welcome to the world of weddings 🙂
**Tickets are non-refundable. If you are unable to attend you can sell your ticket to another photographer.
If you have any questions at all you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Can’t wait to see you there!
