Engagement Photos at The Spiral Jetty, Great Salt Lake, Utah

Many people don’t know about this amazing spiral on the Northern shore of the Great Salt Lake here in Utah. It is about an hour off any main road, so you can’t just see it from the freeway. 

Robert Smithson’s earthwork Spiral Jetty (1970) is located at Rozel Point peninsula on the northeastern shore of Great Salt Lake. Using over six thousand tons of black basalt rocks and earth from the site, Smithson formed a coil 1,500 feet long and 15 feet wide that winds counterclockwise off the shore into the water. In 1999, through the generosity of the artist Nancy Holt, Smithson’s wife, and the Estate of Robert Smithson, the artwork was donated to Dia Art Foundation.

The spiral jetty is a beautiful spot for engagement photos because there is so much variety here. Near the parking lot are black rocks and dry brush. Then the jetty is in the sandy shore. In the Winter/Spring, the spiral is usually flooded so it is covered with salt and pretty pink water.

Mandy and Johnny’s spiral jetty engagement photos turned out amazing! My favorite time to get engagement photos is just before sunset. That way we get a beautiful glow, then the pretty sunset colors, and get to walk back to the car under the stars.
