The Utah State Capitol is one of Salt Lake City’s most iconic engagement photo locations, and when Daniel and Ella chose it for their session, it was immediately clear why. Shot in early April just before sunset, the warm pre-golden hour light poured across the Capitol’s striking granite columns. We started indoors to make the best of the skylights beautifully drawing in light from outside.
Daniel arrived in a rich brown suit, Ella in a floral dress that twirled so well! His tie matched her dress perfectly. Elegant, coordinated, and completely natural from the very first frame.
One thing couples often wonder about the Capitol is whether it’s worth visiting outside of cherry blossom season. The honest answer is yes — and Daniel and Ella’s session is proof. An unusually warm Utah spring had already brought and gone the blossoms by April this year, but the Capitol revealed something just as beautiful without them.
The architectural details of the south side’s newer structure provided a fresh, modern counterpoint to the building’s classical columns, and the interior rotunda offered a grand, polished backdrop that felt more presidential than any outdoor setting could. Moving between indoor and outdoor locations throughout a single session gives couples visual variety in their gallery — soft interior light for intimate close portraits, warm directional sunlight outside for the sweeping, editorial images that stop a Pinterest scroll cold.
Daniel and Ella were naturals — the kind of couple who has joyful smiles and elegant looks that serve. Their mages feel as elegant and timeless as the setting itself.
